This workshop is for adolescent girls ages eleven to fourteen and focuses on increasing self-development and awareness of others, identifying individual strengths and goals, and confidence building. The workshop is typically eight to ten weeks long with a one-hour session per week, but can also be designed as an ongoing program. Sessions include writing and journaling prompts, expressive arts, and discussions of topics such as self-identity, self-expression through creative writing, inner and outer boundaries, empowering relationships, and personal goal achievement.

“Something dramatic happens to girls in early adolescence . . . studies show that girls’ IQ scores drop . . . They lose their resiliency and optimism and become less curious and inclined to take risks. They lose their assertive, energetic and “tomboyish” personalities and become more deferential, self-critical and depressed. They report great unhappiness with their own bodies.”

“Without some help, the loss of wholeness, self-confidence and self-direction can last well into adulthood.” ~ Mary Pipher, Reviving Ophelia

“Middle school is the beginning of the transition from girlhood to womanhood and, not coincidentally, the time of greatest self-esteem loss.” ~ Peggy Orenstein, Schoolgirls: Young Women, Self-Esteem, and the Confidence Gap
